Frequently Asked Questions
Most experts recommend conducting an annual security assessment that focuses on three primary areas: 1) physical assessment including access and environmental safety, 2) policies and procedures including security staff and non-security staff training, and 3) technology integration and monitoring. While assessments can be conducted by internal resources there is a significant benefit in hiring outside consultants to conduct these assessments to review the program without bias and influence from current practice.
There are many factors that go into determining if a hospital should hire and staff armed security officers, some of the criteria that should be reviewed are community crime risk, trends in crime risk, types of incidents occurring in the facility, trauma level, and number of access points. Additionally, the presence of a Behavioral Health Unit must be addressed in the analysis. Staffing armed security officers is a complicated endeavor and should be aligned with hospital leadership and Board of Director goals.
There isn’t a single right answer to this question. It takes a multi-layered approach to providing a safe environment this includes access to security resources when needed, appropriate access controls, a methodology to insure that weapons and individuals with malicious intent are not allowed in the facility, and training for everyone in proper policies and procedures to deescalate events and/or prevent security issues from occurring.

Healthcare security is a noble and rewarding profession. With decades of experience, we still start each day with a new sense of awareness and a commitment to the critical mission of providing a safe, secure environment where patients come for medical treatment and healing.”
