The Association for Healthcare Foodservice (AHF)– Understand Self Op Programs and the Benefits of a Business Partnership

AHF was established nine years ago when legacy organizations, American Society for Healthcare Foodservice Administrators (ASHFSA) and Healthcare Foodservice Management (HFM), joined forces to establish the “premier” organization for self-operated healthcare food management professionals.

Representing roughly 60% of the membership are 650 self-op healthcare facilities (Operator members), including chefs, dietitians, foodservice managers and directors. Soriant Solutions is proud to be a three-year Business Partnership member, providing our in-depth knowledge, expertise, and service to many of these hospitals and healthcare systems.

Food Service Budget Savings

AHF believes that self-operated food service increases food quality and customer satisfaction and proves a commonly used tool to its business partners – AHF Member Community Digest. This sounding board allows all members to stay current with the industries newest trends; such as government compliance standards and patient feeding programs.

Members can share recent Joint Commission survey results so that other members are prepared to meet continuously changing standards. Challenges such as:

  • Feeding difficult populations such as Psychiatric units
  • Culinary training for hourly and leadership positions
  • Establishing Room Service Programs for specialty populations such as Maternity wards

Currently, AHF has 14 Regional chapters and is in the process of expanding the number of chapters to meet the growing demand. With 11 committees that range from Education, Benchmarking, Conference Committee, and more, Soriant has served a rewarding tenure on the Membership Committee.

AHF holds an annual conference, with hundreds of members attending the 3.5-day event to hear great speakers and to network. One of the highlights for me is the opportunity to “give back” to the community within the conference host location. Last year over 700 healthy and nutritious “brown bag lunches” were prepared and delivered to children in need.

Operator members are encouraged to utilize the benchmarking program. The results of the benchmarking program data are often used to justify staffing needs and budget adjustments. Operator members enter statistical and financial data monthly using a specific methodology, so all comparison groups are similar.
